Fra Angelico's Annunciations reproduce the state of humiliation, the moment in which Mary humbly accepts the will of God. He presents the same painting subject, however, in different ways for different purposes: the altarpiece in Cortona (c. 1435) is intended for public devotion.
In Cortona, the Virgin receives the angel in a porticoed Renaissance villa in which the perspective of the columns links together all the protagonists of the mystery of the redemption: Adam and Eve expelled from the Garden of Eden and Mary. God the Father is present in the medallion above the central column, while the Holy Spirit is represented by the flying dove.
