In autumn 1883 in Drente, van Gogh only painted peasant cottages. He tried to reflect his position in life by the small cottages. Like himself, the squat, windswept cottages with slant roofs, scattered about the vast flatlands, van Gogh felt small; the cottages was metaphor of his bitter experience. We can get the feeling when viewing the painting. Van Gogh was telling his inner world by the cottages.
